Designing a music app that connects artists, fans, and venues

Client: Yodl Music

Role: UX and Product Designer, Brand Strategist

Team: UX Researcher, Stakeholders

Agency: Freelance

View Prototype

The Yodl Music prototype helped secure early-stage investment and set the foundation for a live music app now rated 4.5 stars on the App Store.

As UX and Product Designer, I created the brand and product experience that transformed an early paper napkin concept into an investor-ready prototype—aligning user journeys, visual storytelling, and brand positioning to attract Grammy-winning backers and inspire future development.

Yodl’s founders envisioned a platform that brings together fans, artists, and venues through shared love of live music. But the initial idea lacked a cohesive experience strategy or clear value proposition to communicate its potential to investors and users.

The challenge was to define the product’s story—bridging audience needs, brand purpose, and usability—while designing a prototype that would excite investors and guide the eventual MVP launch.

The Challenge

Partnering with a Senior UX Researcher, I led design thinking workshops to align stakeholders on audience pain points, competitive gaps, and core opportunities.

We conducted interviews and synthesized insights into three distinct user journeys—fans, artists, and promoters—mapping motivations and friction points to craft an inclusive, emotionally resonant product narrative.

Drawing from my own experience as a musician, I infused the design with authenticity and empathy, grounding accessibility and community-building at the heart of the brand.

The Approach

Using insights from research and testing, I designed and prototyped three interactive demo experiences showcasing onboarding, event discovery, and artist engagement.

Each flow illustrated how the app could unite audiences around real-time music experiences while maintaining scalability for future features.

The brand direction balanced modern digital energy with emotional connection—pairing a bold interface with an accessible tone of voice and visual style built for connection.

From Insights to Design

Sarah Vieweg, Stakeholder & UX Researcher

“Jen is an astute, highly perceptive collaborator who cares deeply about users, how they interact with a product, and in ensuring that tasks or goals are accomplished in a seamless and straightforward manner.

In addition, she pays close attention to various factors that impact design; from accessibility to ally-ship, Jen is a thoughtful and insightful partner. I have greatly enjoyed working with her, I have learned so much throughout our collaboration, and would welcome a chance to work with her in the future.”

Ryan Nikolich, Stakeholder

“Jen is a thoughtful, considerate product owner with amazing design chops. She took a rudimentary wireframe app idea and brought it to life. This complex mobile and web application that she worked on was in partnership with some of today’s “A-List” country music stars who loved her work.

Jen is a business thinker who took our primary design considerations to a whole new level. She is a compassionate logical thinker, leader, and team player. Jen is a MUST have asset on every project team.”

Outcomes

The prototype became the cornerstone of Yodl’s seed funding round, helping secure investment from Grammy-winning industry partners and propelling the team toward a successful MVP launch.

The user-centered design system established during this phase guided Yodl’s internal product and engineering teams—ultimately informing the live app experience now rated 4.5 stars in the App Store.

Stakeholders credited the design process with helping “connect the dots between vision and reality,” setting a clear foundation for brand growth and user adoption.

Reflections

Yodl reminded me of the power of co-creation and listening—how authentic experiences emerge when design begins with shared vision and trust.

Guiding an early-stage idea into a viable, investor-ready product strengthened my belief that creativity thrives where empathy and entrepreneurship meet.
